MENDOZA’S GONE ON THE PUBLIC RECORD. IT’S 100% THE SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENTS’ JOB TO SUBMIT OPENING PLANS TO THE STATE THAT ALLOW FOR FULL REOPENING, NOT HIS.
At Monday‘s special committee meeting of the Monroe County Legislature, Health Commissioner Michael Mendoza stated repeatedly that he had NO AUTHORITY whatsoever to approve or deny County schools’ reopening plans. In fact, he denied even reading their plans!
This COMPLETELY CONTRADICTS the numerous public claims made by Monroe County Superintendents that Mendoza has rejected their proposals for school reopening, including using barriers.
Furthermore, Mendoza stated explicitly that he has NO AUTHORITY to OPEN or Close schools! It’s the job of the Superintendents to submit plans to the State for acceptance!
This revelation by Mendoza sparked a VERY STRONG response by legislators, who rightly called into question the judgement and performance of our superintendents. Legislator Baynes was particularly vocal. (See video below...)
